Acceptance and Commitment TherapY

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, is a model of therapy that I use a lot in my practice.

ACT encourages being present in the moment and taking value-led action.

A person's internal experience includes their thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, urges, and mental images. Cultivating awareness of the internal experience increases self-knowledge and allows for a more vibrant life.

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance can also be called "willful acknowledgment," and it means holding space for  the entire spectrum of experiences, including both pleasant and unpleasant. Practicing acceptance makes it possible to redirect the energy away from frantic efforts to get rid of what's unpleasant and toward intentional, value-aligned action instead.

Acknowledging the limits of what cannot be controlled illuminates paths for agency. Commitment begins by discovering or reconnecting with values. With committed action – value-aligned behavior – fulfillment and meaning prosper.
